    Today's Featured Celeb
Today's Featured Arab Celeb is: Rola Saad

Rola Saad, born in Lebanon, started her career in the entertainment field at a young age. She had always felt a passion for music and dance. Growing up in a family that did not own much, Rola felt determined to make an artist out of herself. At the age of 16, she participated in "Miss Beurit Beauty" and won the title. She received much publicity and was offered a job modeling for famous French designers. After a few years modeling, Rola stepped into acting. She was given two roles, one for a Syrian series,"The Four Season", and another Oman show called "The Treasure". Despite her popularity, Rola was still not satisfied. She went to a recording company and demanded a chance to prove her talent. She stunned the producers and was immediately signed on.

Rola has had a few hits, but none as big as her duet with Sabah. "Yana Yana" and "Dalooaa" have been widely played for the last few months and continue to be on top of Arabian charts. When asked about her view for her singing career, Rola commented: "I trust in God. I'm hoping it will all be good... but I will not be another Nancy Ajram".

    Nawal Al Zoghbi
BIO: Nawal Al Zoghbi was born June 29, 1972 in Lebanon. Nawal began singing at an early age, despite familial opposition to the lifestyle of a musician (her family changed their minds when they realized she was serious in her ambitions). She is influenced by the work of pioneering Arabic pop singers such as Egypt's Umm Kulthum and the very famous Arab singer Samira Said. Inspired by her appearance on Studio El Fan in 1988 (singing competition), Nawal became a professional singer in 1991. After a visit to her birth city of Beirut she released her debut album "Wehyati Andak" in 1992.With that success she released a string of hit albums such as "Ayza El Radd" and "Balaee Fi Zamany". The video "Wala Behimini" from the album "Balaee Fi Zamany" secured her stardom with her image being broadcast on several billboards and magazines such as the Arabic version of "ELLE".In 1996 Nawal released one of her most successful albums to date named "Habeit Ya Leil". The album spawned 3 hit singles with "Habeit Ya Leil", "Noss El Alb", and "Ghareeb El Ray". This was her final album with her label Music Box International, with which she terminated her contract. In 1998 Nawal Al-Zoghbi released her album and single titled Mandam aleik. The song was apparently originally sung by Syrian singer Houwaida. It was a huge success for Houwaida, but a short while later Al-Zoghbi released the album with her version of the song. When asked about the allegations of taking Houwaida's debut song, Al-Zoghbi claimed she had the song for a while and recorded it prior to Houwaida's release. On television interviews, she showed papers which showed lyrics of the song claiming that these are the originals and that Houwaida took it from her.
"Mandam Aleik" is available on both singers' albums and both got their share of popularity after the conflict. It became one of Nawal's most popular hits, and is often requested by fans at her concerts. Nawal's next album Maloum was released in 1999 and did not receive the same level of success as her previous albums. Nawal herself declared regrets for rushing the release so soon after Mandam Aleik. Nawal's next two releases El Layali 2000 and Tool Omri 2001 were both released within a year of each other, and provided Nawal with continued success, reclaiming her spot atop the pantheom of Arabic pop. After a two year break, Nawal's next album Eineik Kaddabeen was released in the summer of 2004 at a lavish album launch party in Cairo Inn. This album was accompanied by two singles: 'Eineik Kaddabeen' and 'Bi'einek'. Immediately after promoting that album, Nawal then began work on her most recent album Yama Alou. She released the first single 'Rohi Ya Rohi' in August 2005. Her first live performance of 'Rohi Ya Rohi' was at a concert she held at the Hammersmith Apollo, in London. The next single released from Yama Alou was 'Shou Akhbarak' in February 2006. As part of the promotion for her 11th album Yama Alou, her production company, Alam el Phan, began previewing short clips from some of the upcoming albums songs on a telephone line that listeners could call. Shortly after, an advertisement campaign was launched. It began with a television advert showing the camera moving from a womans boots upwards, but stopping before her face was revealed, the screen went dark and the word 'soon' appeared on the screen. A week or so later, the next advertisement followed a similar format to the previous one, however, in this new advert, the face of the woman was revealed and the figure was Nawal herself. After this, the next advert showed clips of Nawal from the albums promotional photo shoot while playing small clips of the songs 'Yama Alou', 'Aghla el Habbayib', 'El Assi', 'Habaytak' and 'Shou Akhbarak'.The television campaign was accompanied by large billboards and posters of Nawal in Egypt and Lebanon. The music video for Yama Alou, began to air at the beginning of July 2006, roughly a week before the album release date. The music video was aired on the Mazzika and Zoom music channels across the Middle East and the song was played exclusively on the Sawt el Ghad radio station in Lebanon as well as the Nagoum FM in Egypt.Yama Alou was intended to be released throughout the middle east on the 17th of July 2006, however, due to the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, its release was postponed. It was then released on 26 July 2006 in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. In the following weeks, the album was made available in other countries around the middle east and was finally released in Lebanon on the 14 September 2006, once the war was over. On the 23rd of March 2007, it was announced that Nawal al Zoghbi will be producing her next album with the production company Rotana. Nawal officially joined Rotana at a press conference at the Movenpick in Beirut on the 28th March 2007. At a press conference held by LG global at the hotel Dosit in Dubai on the 25th April 2007, it was announced that Nawal Al Zoghbi will be the face to advertise LG cellular phones which the company will put out in 2007-2008 in the Middle East. The conference was attended by a large crowd from various media, which exceeded a variety of over 100 means of information between written, visual and audible. On Sunday, May 20th, 2007, Nawal Al Zoughbi was a guest on the hit show Taratata (Dubai TV Channel) along with four other singers. Nawal sang duets with the other four singers who will be making appearances on the show. Ibrahim Al-Hakami(Superstar 4) and Massari(Canadian/Lebanese singer) are among the four guests that appeared and sang with Nawal on Sunday. On Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 Nawal released the music video of her song, "Aghla El Habayib" from her album "Yama Alou" which was a continuation to the song "Shou Akhbarak" from the same album. Nawal is the oldest of her three brothers and one sister. She is married to Elie Deeb and has three children: a daughter Tia (b. 1999, and twin sons Georgy and Joey (b. 2004). However she prefers to keep her personal life private. She released a song titled Tia which was dedicated to her daughter. She also owns a production company named after her daughter, Tia Productions. Nawal has been known for her distinctive performances, and has always taken her image into careful consideration. She constantly has changed her image much like Madonna and Kylie Minogue. Nawal has always been known to take special care with her music. She has final say over her lyrics and songs as well as promotion. She has stated controlling her career is one of her keys to success.

The accompanying video, in which Sabah is shown as "the notorious diva" to whom her younger colleague pays tribute, has received wide play on Arabic music channels. Sabah has been married seven times, and most recently was engaged to Amr Mihio ("Mr. Lebanon") in 2003. Sherine
BIO: Born in Cairo on October 10, 1980 Sherine Abdel Wahhab is an Egyptian singer and actress. Sherine is a graduate of a prominent Egyptian music academy. Upon graduating, she sought a record company to represent her and manage her musical career. She met up with Free Music Productions' owner and manager Nasr Mahrous. Mahrous signed and released a debut album with fellow singer Tamer Hosny. The album included solo singles, as well as duets. Titled Free Mix, it is one of the mixtapes Mahrous usually produces but was exclusively for these two artists. Although Sherine was a new artist with Free Music, Tamer had signed with Mahrous earlier. The album included Sherine's debut single, "Ah Ya Leil", which garnered huge success in Egypt and throughout the Middle East. Critics and audience were impressed with Sherine's vocal abilities, but wanted her to revamp her image. The song included local musical styles from traditional Egyptian tarab voice techniques to usage of traditional Egyptian music instruments of the Shaabi genre. Hosny's single, along with the music video, were also received very well and this mixtape was considered a milestone in Free Music's short history. In 2002, Sherine released her first album as a solo artist titled Garh Tany. The album's first single was the title track, "Garh Tany", and it was well-received. The single consisted mainly of repetition, with intensive manipulation in voice tones and pitch. This is also considered to be a traditional Egyptian voice technique. The music video was released one week earlier from the album release, and the album made huge success in the Egyptian and wider Middle Eastern music market. The album succeeded immensely, to the extent that it sold more than Amr Diab's album "Allem Albi". Sherine witnessed rapid and explosive popularity after this album, and solidified her status as one of the most successful female singers. By North American standards, the album would be the equivalent of certified platinum. Sherine's second single from the album was "Sabri Aleel", which was an up-tempo song, uses slight traditional techniques, but included Nai, Tablah, Heavy Bass and multi-layered voices of Sherine in the choruses. The music video's version of the song was different from the album's, and it was titled "Sabri Aleel - Melody Mix". The song was exclusively broadcast on Melody Hits channel. Sherine's acting career is short, as she just starred in one comedy movie titled Medo Mashakel. The movie was the #1 movie of the season, however, Sherine as well as critics did not approve of her role or her acting skills. In the movie, Sherine sings and one of the singles sung in the movie was broadcasted on music channels. The song was titled "Balak". It portrays Sherine, as one of the movie's scenes, getting on stage in a friend's wedding and performing the song. The song didn't get as much attention, as it wasn't released on any record. A compilation album for Sherine was released under the title Roo'. The album included the movie-song "Balak", along with few other songs of her such as "Afriqiya" (Africa) and other songs of Tamer Hosny. The album was considered unofficial, as it wasn't released under Free Music label since Sherine was still signed with the company. By this time, and before releasing the single "Ma Btefrahsh", it was reported in magazines and tabloid-newspapers that Sherine was having a fall-out with Nasr Mahrous, but it was not confirmed. Sherine was on a hiatus during that time, as she didn't release any singles nor albums for quite a while, and according to some sources, Sherine was mad at her producer and manager, Nasr Mahrous, for not fulfilling the terms of agreement in their contract. In early 2005, Promotions for Sherine's new song, "Ma Btefrahsh" showed up on Melody Hits, and a week later the music video was released. The song became quite popular, and it was heavily rotated on Melody Hits. It hit #1 on many countdowns, and like most songs of Sherine, several artists expressed their love for this song, like Ragheb Alama and Nancy Ajram. The song was almost like a comeback to Sherine. It was featured in a mixtape along other singles by fellow Free Music artists, such as Bahaa Sultan, Souma and Tamer Hosny. The mixtape featured another single by Sherine, "Einak". Both songs were frequently aired on Radio channels. In August 2005, Sherine's new single was also promoted on Melody Hits TV, and it seemed certain that this was going to be one of the album releases as she had said earlier in TV interviews. The promotion shows a camera following Sherine's bare feet walking, up to a chair where she sits, but it doesn't show her face. Another promo had a sample from her second single "Mafeesh Marra". More than a week later, the single, titled "Lazim Aïsh" was released. It was also produced and directed by Nasr Mahrous, the song took a different form as it was a ballad. This was the title track as well. The album, Lazim Aïsh, was released and became the best selling album that year. The album also would be certified platinum as it made huge success. This is the era that solidified Sherine as Egypt's # 1 female singer. No Egyptian female singer witnessed the great level of success she reached. Later on, the second single music video of "Mafeesh Marra" was released, it was an up-tempo, fun, hip song which the audience were delighted by its new and unique sound. In spring 2006, Sherine was chosen to perform the songs for the movie An el-Ish' wel-Hawa. The movie's theme song, Keteer Ben'sha', became a major hit. Recently, she released "Lebnan Fel Alb (Lebanon's in the Heart)", a song dedicated to Lebanon and the victims who fell in the Israeli-Lebanese conflict. In February 2007, she released a new duet with Hany Shaker under the title Qalbi Leek (My Heart’s Yours). However, this duet was not meant to be released because both Sherine and Hany Shakir recorded the song separately. Sherne decided not to release the song in her album, so Hany Shaker decided to take it and release it in his own album. Nevertheless the composer of the song merged both of their voices, and released the song as a duet. In early March 2007, she confirmed that she joined a new label: Rotana. A huge, extravagant press conference and after-party was held in her honor, and now she is recording her album, to be released Summer 2007. In the end of May 2007, she released a new single, titled "Ma Sherebtesh Mn Nilha", Showed up on Egypt Tv at Al Beet Betak TV Show.

BIO: Rania Hussein was born October 8, 1981, known as Ruby is an Egyptian singer and actress who rose to fame with her debut single Enta Aref Leih (Do You Know Why?). Egyptian director and producer, Sherif Sabri, is credited for launching her career. She is considered to be one of the most talked about female artists in Egypt. Ruby (full name Rania Hussein Mohammed Tawfik) started her career as a model when Marcel Romanoff, the Polish singer, spotted her in front of the American University in Cairo. Romanoff chose Ruby to appear in his music video. She later appeared in the music video of his song Don't Make Me Cry. Ruby previously studied Law at Bani Suwayf University.
Ruby later worked in television commercials for several products, including Pringles, Sparkle, and Alo. She then worked with Egyptian film director Youssef Chahine in the film Sekoot Hansawwar (2001), in which she played the role of a romantic wealthy girl who falls in love with her driver. Youssef Chahine is reportedly responsible for the switch to her stage name, "Ruby". She previously appeared in the comedy Film Thakafy in a minor role as a schoolgirl. Her first music video of debut single "Enta Aref Leih" (2003), was directed by Sherif Sabri and was a hit on most satellite music stations in the Middle East during the summer of 2003. This video caused a huge stir in the media, causing people and critics to criticize the way Ruby appeared in provocative costume of a belly dancer, wandering in the streets of Prague. Despite such opposing and criticism, the successful single brought Ruby into the limelight. The song was composed by the well-known Egyptian musician Mohammad Rahim.Ruby's second video was released in early 2004. Titled "Leih Beydary Kedah" and directed by Sherif Sabri, the video again featured provocative contents as the first one. At the last seconds of the video, it showed Ruby 'in the making' with some make-over scenes of makeover by stylists in Beirut, others of her recording songs with Mohammad Rahim and Sherif Sabri. Ruby in the music video of Meshit Wara Ehsasy. The third music video of the song "El Gharaam (Koll Amma A'ollo Ah)" was accompanied by clips from Ruby's movie, Saba' Wara'aat Kotcheena (7 Playing Cards). The movie was critically distressed by the censorship and governments of Egypt, Syria and many other Arabic countries did not allow its running due to the overt usage of erotic themes and suggestive hints. Directed and produced by Sherif Sabri, it was his first experience in cinema. Two music videos were released later. One for "Ana Omry Mastaneat Hadd" and the other for "Ghawy" Both are taken from the movie Saba' Wara'aat Kotcheena (7 Playing Cards). "Eba'a Abelni" music video is the latest by Ruby. The music video's theme was set to be ancient Egyptian, with Ruby dancing in set-up studios. The video's version of the song was rearranged by Sherif Sabri himself. He was also the director of the music video. She has been sponsored by MelodyHits TV, and provided exclusive broadcast to the video."Mosh Hate'dar" is her the first single from her second album released in March 2007, titled Meshit Wara Ehsasy. The music video of "Mosh Hate'dar" surprised the audience due to her straying away from the provocative image of her previous music videos, and having a rather conservative one. The second single was the title track "Meshit Wara Ehsasy", featured her performing in Giza, in front of the Pyramids and Sphinx. Ruby has been questioned in numerous interviews about her provocative style and suggestive moves, to which she responded that she does not consider herself to be a sex symbol. She was also rumoured to be married to her manager, Sherif Sabri, but both her and Sabri have denied the rumour.

    Mohamed Mounir
BIO: Mohamed (born October 10, 1954) is a Nubian-Egyptian singer who was born in Aswan, Egypt. His pop-oriented music has its roots in the various genres of traditional Egyptian and African music. His lyrics are often social and political, with which Mounir sees himself as a mouthpiece for the cultural and religious togetherness of the Orient and Occident. Mounir is considered the darling of Egyptian youth. Mounir, has also gathered experiences in film: the film Destiny from Youssef Chahine, a prominent outsider in Egyptian cinema and at the same time its most internationally renowned representative, is a reckoning with the growing fundamentalism of his country. Mounir plays the singer Marwan from the 12th century, who escapes an attempted assassination by stirred up fanatics the first time, but succumbs the second time - a reference the Algerian Rai singer, but also Egyptian literary figures like Naguib Mahfouz or Farag Foda. After the Sept 11 attacks, the singer was driven to learn more about Islam, which he feared was being seen in the West as the faith of terrorism and intolerance. So Mounir performed the hajj, the pilgrimage at the heart of Islam, for the first time last winter. He returned critical of both fellow Muslims, who he says don't bother to seek a true understanding of their faith, and of a West that he says misunderstands it. Mounir released the album Earth . . . Peace, containing the song Give Me Strength, O Messenger of God, which he co-wrote with Kawthar Mustafa. In it, he sings, "The spilling of any blood is deemed sinful by God." The album struck some as surprisingly religious for an artist seen as a champion of secularism. For others, it was not religious enough; the video for the song was banned by most Arab satellite channels. The video ban reportedly was because Mounir sang "maddad", a vernacular term that roughly means "give me strength" but that can also be translated as a call on Muhammad to intercede with God on man's behalf. Most Muslims do believe in the intercession Muhammad for it is proven in the quran in numerous places but it is deemed as not possible by the Wahabbis (the major stronghold in Saudi Arabia). The 48-year-old artist took the controversy in his stride. "It is this fight against rigid thought that makes something out of you," he says. That philosophy sums up one of his best-known characters. In Destiny, a 1997 film by Youssef Chahine, a leading Egyptian director, Mounir played Marawan, a singer in the 12th century Islamic state built by Arab and Berber dynasties in Spain. "Marwan and I are one and the same," Mounir says, describing the character as an "ambitious artist who does not believe that anything should be deemed sinful in art." "Sing loudly, nothing should stop your singing," Mounir sang as Marwan in another Kawthar Mustafa hit. Mounir, who sang on the soundtracks for nine Chahineproductions and acted in some, says he is proud to be Chahine's "voice in cinematography." Their collaboration in the movie An Egyptian Tale resulted in a popular song of the same title that ordinary Egyptians embraced as an anthem. The music was written by the late Ahmed Mounib, a Nubian folk musician who was Mounir's mentor.

He used to record his voice whilst singing on cassette tapes. Many great Arabic artists influenced Hamada, such as Abdel Halim Hafez, Mohamed Abdo and Om Kolthoum. At school, Hamada sung during the school breaks and entertainment periods. One of his friends would be playing a drum, Hamada would be singing and a girl would be dancing. When Hamada was seven, one of his relatives heard him while he was singing and took Hamada to a musician. He learned the music basics and was encouraged. The musician told Hamda that he would introduce him to sing at a wedding of one of his relatives after three months. This was the starting point of his career. Abdel Halim Hafez
BIO: Abdel Halim Isma'el Shabana commonly known as Abdel Halim Hafez, was one of the most popular Egyptian singers and actors not only in Egypt but throughout the Middle East from the 1950s to the 1970s. He is widely considered to be one of the four 'greats' of Egyptian and Arabic music. Abdel Halim's music is still played on radio daily in Egypt and the Arab world. His name is sometimes written as 'Abd el-Halim Hafez, and he was also sometimes known as el-Andaleeb el-Asmar (the Dark Nightingale). He was born Abdel Halim Ali Ismail Shabana in El-Hilwat, in e-Sharqiyah Governorate, 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Cairo, Egypt. Abdel Halim was the fourth child of Sheikh Ali Ismail Shabana. He had two brothers, Ismail and Mohammed, and one sister, Aliah. Abdel Halim's mother died from complications after giving birth to him, and his father died five months later, leaving Abdel Halim and his siblings orphaned at a young age. Abdel Halim was raised by his aunt and uncle in Cairo. His musical abilities first became apparent while he was in primary school, and his older brother Ismail Shabana was his first music teacher. At the age of 11 he joined the Arabic Music Institute in Cairo and became known for singing the songs of Mohammed Abdel Wahab. He graduated from the Higher Theatrical Music Institute as an oboe player. While singing in clubs in Cairo, Abdel Halim was drafted as a last-minute substitute when singer Karem Mahmoud was unable to sing a scheduled live radio performance in honor of the first anniversary of the 1952 Revolution, on June 18, 1953. Abdel Halim's performance was enormously popular with the live audience, and was heard by Hafez Abd El Wahab, supervisor of musical programming for Egyptian national radio, who decided to support the then unknown singer. Abdel Halim took Hafez Abdel Wahab's first name as his stage-surname in recognition of his patronage. Abdel Halim went on to become one of the most popular singers and actors of his generation, and is considered one of the four greats of Egyptian and Arabic music, along with Umm Kalthoum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Farid Al Attrach. Abdel Halim never married, although rumours persist that he was secretly married to actress Souad Hosni for six years. Both Abdel Halim and Souad Hosni's friends continue to deny the marriage even to this day. Interestingly, Souad Hosni died on Abdel Halim's birthday (June 21) in 2001. Despite this, Abdel Halim only truly fell in love once, in his youth. He fell in love with a young woman whose parents refused to allow them to marry. After four years, her parents finally approved, but the girl died of a chronic disease before the wedding. Abdel Halim never recovered from her loss, and dedicated many of his saddest songs to her memory, including Fi Youm, Fi Shuher, Fi Sana (In a Day, a Month, a Year) and the poignant Qariat el-Fingan (The Fortune-teller). At the age of 11 Abdel Halim contracted Bilharzia – a parasitic water-born disease – and was periodically and painfully afflicted by it. During his lifetime, many artists and commentators accused Abdel Halim of using his Bilharzia to gain sympathy from female fans. His death of the disease put to rest such accusations. Abdel Halim died on March 30, 1977, a few months short of his 48th birthday, while undergoing treatment for Bilharzia in King's College Hospital, London. His funeral (in Cairo) was attended by thousands of people – more than any funeral in Egyptian history except those of President Nasser (1970) and Umm Kalthoum (1975). Four women committed suicide on hearing of his death. He is buried in Al Rifa'i Mosque in Cairo. His music can still be heard every day across the Arab world, and he is still considered one of the four 'greats' of Arabic music. Further, he is today seen as the most famous and popular singer in the Arab world, insofar as he is the artist whose discs have been the most sold since his death (reportedly, even more than Oum Kalthoum). Abdel Halim Hafez's song Khosara enjoyed international fame in 1999 when producer Timbaland sampled it for Jay-Z's song "Big Pimpin.'' His most famous songs include Ahwak ("I love you"), Khosara ("A pity"), Gana El Hawa ("Love came to us"), Sawah ("Wanderer"), Zay el Hawa ("It feels like love"), and El Massih ("The Christ"), among the 260 songs that he recorded. His last, and perhaps most famous song, Qariat el-Fingan ("The fortune-teller"), featured lyrics by Nizar Qabbani and music by Mohammed Al-Mougy. He starred in sixteen films, including "Dalilah", which was Egypt's first colored motion picture. Along with Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Magdi el-Amroussi, Abdel Halim was a founder of the Egyptian recording company Soutelphan, which continues to operate to this day as EMI Arabia. The company was founded in 1961. In 2006 a feature film about his life, "Haleem", was released starring the late actor Ahmad Zaki in the title role, produced by the Good News Group.

The full versions of the songs accompanied the performance in addition to scenes from the movie were made into music videos. They were initially exclusive to Melody Hits channel. In 2005, Hosny was embroiled in a trial case in which he was charged with forging a passport and avoiding conscription. It was a heavily publicized case in the media, since he and fellow Egyptian artist Haytham Shaker were both convicted with the same charges. It has been reported that they both went to professional forgers to create a document that they completed military service in Egypt. This came in the middle of Hosny's preparations for a new Album and movie(Omar and Salma). It was also reported that the news leaked after the forger himself confessed to a close friend of his. They were both sentenced to 3 years in jail, and were fined 50,000 L.E each. Rumors have circulated that Hosny's sentence was shortened. He was released from jail in September 2006. During his imprisonment, Nasr Mahrous released the album Einaya Bethebbak, as well as a music video from one of the album's singles. At the end of March 2007, Hosny released his latest album "Ya Bent El-Eih" after long time working for it. The album featured 13 songs, 9 of them were stolen and leaked on the internet before it was released to market nearly by a week. Tamer Hosny's official site says about this album: "It's a nice album that considered to be his first real step in his musical life". Tamer Hosny holds a bachelor degree in Media Studies from October 6 University.

    Ramy Ayach
BIO: In a small country like Lebanon, it is not an everyday occurrence that a talented young man achieves his big dream of becoming a famous, internationally-acknowledged singer. But that was what Ramy Ayach actually did. Most people might think that Ramy's luck only brought him to being a star. The truth is quite different. Being the youngest son in a family that loves music, Ramy's first interest in art started in his hometown of Baakleen in the splendid mountains of Lebanon. He was always surrounded by musical instruments offered by his parents to their sons as birthday gifts. The family's common passion for music led Ramy's elder brothers to play in various concerts in town.Ramy's first public appearance was on his school stage. Back in the year 1987, it was not ordinary for a seven-year-old boy to sing on stage with such confidence. Along with his school education, Ramy's talent and personality developed while learning music. When he sang later in a concert celebrating Labor Day, Ramy was only 10 years old and the 10,000 people which were present there encouraged him to move on.At the age of 15, Ramy decided to participate in a contest held every 4 years in the Lebanese TV Station: LBCI (Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International). And so it happened! In January 1996, Ramy participated in a program called "Studio El Fann" and contestants were presented to the audience in the presence of a 10-member committee who were all specialized in art and music. From his first appearance, both the audience and the committee were charmed by his talent on stage. At the end of the contest lasting 9 months Ramy earned a golden medal, certificates from the members of the committee, and his first private song" Bganneelah Webdeellah" which became a hit even before the contest was over.Although many might consider succeeding in this program as the culmination of their goal, to the young determined and ambitious Ramy it was just the beginning. From that period on, Ramy started his career as a singer and a whole world of opportunities was opening up to him. The respect Ramy has for art and his continuous search for the best made him an "amazing phenomenon" in the eyes of many people worldwide.Being a Lebanese singer who has drawing skills, Ramy has been honoured by the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Tourism on Feb.24, 1999. As a result of a survey conducted in most Lebanese radios and TV stations through public voting, Ramy has been hailed the Most Photogenic Male Artist in the Middle East. Later he moved on to writing poetry and was so in love with music that he sold his bike when he was 11 and bought a Oud. It was then that the young and determined Kazem composed his first poem “Laki Antee”. Kazem then began teaching music at a woman’s unity association at the age of 19. But, that was not all he did at the age of 19; the young star also got married to his cousin at that early age. After just two years, the promising singer enrolled in the Institute of Music. It was before he graduated that Kazem sang his first major hit; “Ladghat El-Hayya” (1987). Soon to follow were his other hits “Inni Khayartek”- by the great poet Nazar Qabanni-and “Abart El-Shat” (1988), that launched his fame in Iraq and the Arab countries. Upon graduating in 1988, the young artist was dreaming of further invading the music field and actually achieved a lot by releasing his first two albums “Ghazal” in 1989 and then “Yal Aziz” in 1990.But his dreams were put on hold due to the Gulf war. However that was not going to stop this determined and self- built singer from following the road he had already started long ago. Kazem moved to Lebanon and continued his career and dazzled the Arab world with his strong Patriotism in his hit song “Kathur Alhadeeth”. The year 1992 witnessed his next dazzling album “Haza Allon” and then came “La Ya Sadiki” in 1993. This was truly a masterpiece that further proved the singer’s vocal abilities. It was in 1994 that Kazem relocated to Cairo and in 1995 he faced the Egyptian audience for the first time with “Salamtek Men Elah”-which was an instant hit. The poem was written, composed and performed by Kazem and thus manifested his talents were multiple and exceeded singing. The star was now well known and continued to sell thousands of copies of his albums. Next to come was “Baad Alhob” in 1995 which was no different than the previous albums. His ever popular album “Fi Madraset Al-Hob” came in 1996 as another much expected success story. By now the singer was far beyond proving his talents to anyone but was actually quenching the thirst of the audience who had been deprived of such meaningful poems and songs for so long. Kazem’s couldn’t stop now even if he wanted to as his popularity grew worldwide. He released “Ana Wa Laila” in 1998 and in the same year he won a UNICEF award for his song “Tathakar” which he had earlier performed in the United States for the congress and United Nations. “Habebti wal matter” hit the markets in 1999 and “Al Hob Al Mostahel” came in the year 2000 to hit not only the Arab markets but the international markets also. His next album; “Abhathu Anki”, came in 2001 and was soon followed by another winner; “Kesat Habebayn”, in 2002 and then finally “Hafeyat Al Kadameen” in 2003. The rest is still to come from the singer who composes most of his music and goes on his tours fully equipped with 35 men in his orchestra.

    Hisham Abbas

BIO: Mohammad Hisham Mahmoud Mohammad Abbas was born on September 13, 1963 in Shoubra Egypt. He is commonly known as just Hisham Abbas .He had his primary education in Dar El Tefl school. He was home-schooled for his secondary education & GCE . Later on he enrolled in American University in Cairo as he graduated with a major in Mechanical Engineering. He decided to pursue art as his profession rather than Engineering. Abbas took his first step as a professional singer being a member of Pats Band band with his partner in the band Aliaa Saleh and other friends. They covered a number of Egyptian and Arabic classing songs, such as "Halawet Shamsena", "Ala Remesh Oyonha", "El Wala Dah" and more. Then he met up with widely-known producer and singer Hameed El Shaery. They collaborated to produce successful songs that highlighted Abbas' position in the music scene. Songs like "Halal Aleik", "Allah Yesalem Halak", "Habetah", and "Saea Albak". Abbas' career bloomed later on to release several songs. He rose in the early 90's with successful hits like "Wana Wana Wana", "Eineha El Sood", "Ta'ala", "Ya Leila", "Shoofi" and his most successful hit, "Habibi Dah (Nari Narain)". Up 'til this day, he has 10 solo studio albums in his account. He received a number of awards, the most notably one was Orbit's Arabic Song Award in 1997. He collaborated later on with Hamid El Shaery several times. As Hamid featured him in the hit "Einy" which featured Lebanese model, now singer, Nicole Saba. The song became a huge success, and it was extremely popular in the mid 90's. As of 2001-2002, with his hit "Habibi Dah", it gained him huge success across the Middle East and in some Asian countries, like India, Pakistan, Iran and more. Unfortunately, the audience were expecting something as good as the one-hit wonder album. But Abbas seemed to fail to satisfy their needs. Though his hit single "Fino" did meet quite a success, it was not for too long. The music video was one of its own back then, as it used the time-slice photography technique. The song was from the 2002 album, Gowwa Fi Alby.
His latest single was "Ool Alayya Magnoun" from his album, Seebha Tehebbak, back in 2004. He did a huge concert back then, which featured an unpreviously planned cameo appearance of Egyptian singer, Ruby.Abbas has been on hiatus since.

    Haifa Crashs
It is reported that the Lebanese singer Haifa Wahbi got into a serious car accident on the set of a new video clip that she is doing for a new song on her new album. In the video clip, Haifa is shown to be inside a car while a helicopter overhead is chasing her. The helicopter was flying a little lower then expected and hit Haifa's car from the back and also hit her head. The Lebanese army came to Haifa's rescue and managed to get her and the crew away from the helicopter.

They couldn't get Haifa out from the car, so they had to break the helicopter's fuel which resulted in oil spills all over Haifa and her crew. But the singer is now feeling fine and is currently in the hospital. She wishes to thank the army for their quick response and wishes to tell her fans that she will try to get well as soon as possible and continue filming her video clip. She plays on finishing it when she is released from the hospital. Hmm.. maybe it's just me, but shouldn't they just hired stunt doubles to avoid this type of stuff?!

BIO: Hani Shaker began his musical career at a very early age - learning the piano as a child, when his mother took on the role of agent as well as supervisor of his professional training. After graduation from high school in the early 70’s he started to study music at the prestigious Egyptian Conservatoire.Hani scored his first breakthrough hit in his second year of college in December1972 with a song written by Mohammed El Mougi, “Heloua ya Dounia (It's a Wonderful Life), which his musical set him off on his musical career.. Hakim

BIO: Hakim was born in a small town in Minya, Egypt in 1962. He put together a band when he was only 14 years old and they sang at small parties in their home town. He could not however pursue his dreams of becoming a famous singer out of respect for his father, the Omda, and instead enrolled in the University of Al-Azhar. Finally he graduated with a degree in Communications and went back to his town. Now it was time for him to follow his dream and thus he put together a second band with the aim of playing a different kind of music that would mix the Western and the Middle Eastern styles. But his town was too small for his big aspirations so he packed his bags and was off to Cairo once more - but this time as a wannabe singer.Hakim's big break finally came when he met the big producer Hamid El-Shaeri and got a deal with a records company in 1991. The young singer released his first album ever, Nazra, a year later. The album was an instant hit due to the new music it contained. In 1994, Hakim launched his second album Nar and his popularity soared to the sky. That was not the only good thing that happened that year though; as he was also chosen to represent Egypt at a festival in France. This now famous figure was definitely on a roll now. His next album Efred, witnessed the same success as the previous ones had, when it hit the markets in 1996. Then two years went by and his new album; Hayel saw the light. Hakim won more international recognition when he won the Best North African Singer Award in 2000 and became known abroad - as well as in the Arab region. In the same year he released his hit album Yaho. Then in 2002 he launched a new album Talakek which included the smashing duet "Ya Albi" with the Puerto Rican female singer Olga Tanon. His latest album El Yomen Dol also presented something new; namely the duet "Lela" with the famous American singer James Brown. As for the silver screen, Hakim also has plans for invading it. He dreams of getting his share of the spotlights too, as an actor, and has thus accepted a leading role in the film Ali Spicy and is getting ready to shoot his role once the details are worked out.

    Fairuz

BIO: Born and raised in Lebanon, Fairuz began her musical career as a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim from the 1950's to today, Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution, but also as a cultural and political icon. During most of her career, Fairuz reflected two other great artists, Assi and Mansour Rahbani. They wrote the lyrics and composed her tunes. Today, many of her songs reflect the composing talent of Ziad Rahbani who is Fairuz's son. Her songs testify to the Rahbani musical genius, as well as to Fairuz's broad musical background. As Dr. J. Racy says, "More than just a singer's name, Fairuz is a concept whose connotations are ethnic and nationalistic, as well as musical and poetic." Referred to as "The Soul of Lebanon" in the 70's, Fairuz became a pre-eminent figure, a superstar of current music in the Arab world. Together, the Rahbani family is both a school of music and a cultural phenomenon. For the girl who loved to sing to her friends and neighbors in the little village, it was an overwhelming experience when, in 1957, Lebanon's President Chamoun presented Fairuz with the "Cavalier", the highest medal ever conferred on a Lebanese Artist. In 1969 a memorial Lebanese stamp was issued in her name. Meeting royalty, once an experience she had expected to encounter only in the fairy tales of her childhood, has become a reality for her. She is routinely welcomed, greeted, received, and honored by today's world leaders. In 1963, King Hussein of Jordan presented her with the Medal of Honor, followed by his Majesty's Gold Medal in 1975. In Brazil, the crowds attempted to carry her with her limousine. In 1981, while touring in the U.S., Senators, Governors and Mayors of various cities honored her. A Harvard University scholar, Barry Hoberman, even wrote: "Quite simply, Fairuz is one of the world's nonpareil musicians and outstanding Artists, an international treasure of the order of Rostropovich, Sills, Ravi Shankar, Miles Davis, Sutherland, Pavarotti and Dylan."Her record-breaking concerts at the Royal Festival Hall in London made headlines worldwide. The Daily Mail wrote: "The box office was besieged as never before. Tickets changed hands at more than 1,000 Pounds on the black market. Takings reached a record, breaking the previous best when Frank Sinatra was in town. And who was the star that packed them in last night? Madonna? Springsteen? Domingo? Horowitz? No ... FAIRUZ, the top female singer in the Arab world". Fairuz has headlined at the most prestigious venues in the world including the Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Salle Pleyel, among many others. The history of a LegendOne day in 1935, Wadi Haddad moved his wife and two children into a new home on the cobblestone alley called Zuqaq al-blat, an old neighborhood in Beirut where the poor of all denominations have for generations found company and shelter. The Haddad's new home consisted of a single room on the street level of a typical stone house that faced Beirut's Patriarchate school. The eldest child in Haddad's family was a girl named Nouhad, who would later grow up to be Fairuz, one of the most famous singers of the Middle East and a legend in her own time. From her early childhood, Fairuz displayed a natural flair for singing. Many a winter night, in neighborhood gatherings, she would surprise everyone by suddenly bursting out into song. Her family could not afford to own a radio, the magical commodity possessed by a fortunate few; it was a vehicle for dreams that, in the houses of the poor, provided solace and a vague feeling of belonging to whatever was throbbing out there beyond their reach. She used to sit on the window ledge to listen to the songs from the neighbor's radio that fascinated her. Some of the songs that she loved to sing over and over again in those early days were those by Laila Murad and Asmahan, two Egyptian women singers famous at that time. She did that as she stood in the backyard washing utensils, kneading the dough for marqouq (the Lebanese mountain bread), or helping her mother in the morning. At the same time, being the oldest, she had to take care of her two sisters, Huda and Amal, and her brother Joseph. Sharing things was an article of faith, as it still is among the poor. Once a week, a woman neighbor would shout to the mother from the window to send her children over for their bath. She would bathe the Haddad children with her own and before they would be tucked in bed, the Haddad girl, lounging on her mattress, would sing for them a song or two for a good night's sleep. The father put aside some of his meager income for his children's education, so Fairuz was able to attend school, where her voice was immediately recognized as having a unique quality that could transmute ordinary national hymns into something beguiling. At a school party one day in 1947, a teacher from the Lebanese Conservatory heard her and was struck by certain intimation that he had just made a discovery. This man, Muhammad Fleifel, was looking for new talents at that time among school children to sing national hymns for airing on the newly established Lebanese Radio Station. Hearing the golden reverberations latent within the young singer's throat, Fleifel tended to her voice with fatherly care. He instructed her not to eat spicy food, citrus, or anything else that might hurt her vocal cords. He also cautioned her about singing in high register, or parts that required a shrill delivery. Later on, he was instrumental in helping her enter the National Conservatory. Perhaps his most outstanding contribution is that he taught her how to chant verses from the Quran according to what is known as tajweed, the high style of Quranic intonation in classical Arabic. One day, when Fleifel was presenting a group of songs sung by Fairuz among others, the head of the music department at the Lebanese Radio Station, Halim al-Rumi, happened to hear Fairuz at the recording room and asked to see the girl. After the program was over, a shy, thin girl came to his office. When he asked her if she wanted to sing on the radio, she said that she did. He asked her to sing something for him other than hymns. She thereupon sang Ya Zahratan Fi Khayali by Farid al-Atrash, and Mawwal by Asmahan. Al-Rumi was deeply impressed by her voice, which was typically Eastern and at the same time flexible enough to render a Western mode admirably. She was appointed as a chorus singer at the radio station in Beirut. "My wish was to sing on the radio," Fairuz reminisces. "I was told then that I'd be paid 100 pounds a month (today about $7). To me, this was overwhelming. But at the end of the month I wasn't fortunate enough to fill my eyes with a 100-pound note, because of the tax deductions. It took me a long time to get hold of a 100-pound note intact." Her first song was composed by Halim al-Rumi, with words by Michael Awadh. The second one, In an Atmosphere of Magic and Beauty, was in the Egyptian dialect. Al-Rumi, so excited about the talent he had discovered, introduced Fairuz to Assi Rahbani, a policeman by profession and an aspiring composer who was already aware of the talented new voice and anxious to meet Fairuz. The subsequent collaboration between the composer and the singer eventually resulted in a song that was to launch Fairuz for the first time as a major talent on a popular scale. At first, however, their efforts were mainly in the area of light, dance tunes. Beirut was attracting big bands that came from overseas to play tangos and rumbas to an expanding Westernized segment in the Lebanese capital. One of these was the Eduardo Bianco band from Argentina. While recording at the Near East Broadcasting studios, Sabri Sharif, who directed the music section there, suggested a new experiment hitherto untried in Eastern music. Fairuz was to sing, with Bianco's orchestra, tunes originally composed for dancing, like La Compersita and the tango La Boheme. This took place on October 1, 1951, a decisive day in the life of Fairuz and the two Rahbani brothers, Assi and Mansour. They believed that this was the true beginning of the dance-song in Arab music; only Midhat Assim, an Egyptian composer, had been experimenting in this direction before. The watershed song that launched their career was not a dance-song but a melancholic song called Itab (expostulation). Overnight, Itab established Fairuz as a major singer throughout the Arab world. One of the reasons for the song's success was the excellence of the equipment at the Damascus radio station where the song was recorded on November 12, 1952. Later a commercial disc was cut in Paris. Fairuz and Assi got married in July 1954. At their wedding, large crowds from Beirut gathered on the summer Sunday afternoon to witness the ceremonies. To the Lebanese, Hotel Masabki in Shtura, surrounded by aloe trees, is a dream place that lies in the heart of Lebanon's mountains; there, right after the wedding, the bride and groom went to spend their honeymoon. When the young couple returned from their honeymoon, they moved into a modern villa in the village of Antilias in the suburbs of Beirut. On one side of the house lay orange groves and the Mediterranean; from the other side, one could see cypress woods and mountains. This typical Lebanese setting contributed to the atmosphere of her future songs. The first major success on the scale of the entire Arab world took place one year later, in the summer of 1955, when Fairuz and her husband were formally invited to the Egyptian capital to air their songs from the Egyptian radio station. The couple spent five months in Cairo, then the center of Arab Theatre Cinema and Song. Every night Fairuz would be introduced to some star she had previously seen only on the silver screen. Celebrated Egyptian composers approached her to sing for them, film makers asked her to star for them, but Fairuz - by now pregnant - politely declined. In her private moments she would go out to the streets of Cairo and lose herself in the crowds. Sometimes she would seek a poor juggler who played his "pianola" on a street corner; "he was an artist in his own right" she would think to herself. Other times, she would sit alone wondering what kind of future her new baby would have. Back in Lebanon, she gave birth to her son Ziad on January 1, 1956. Even while she was spending much of each day indoors caring for her baby, Fairuz was preparing to move beyond the limited arena of the recording studios. In the summer of 1957, she faced an audience in the open for the first time, standing at the base of one of the six columns that comprise the temple of Jupiter in Baalbeck. It was the largest audience that had ever gathered at the Roman temple. Under a crescent moon, Fairuz, flooded with blue light, began to sing in a calm, confident voice, Lubnan Ya Akhdar Hilo (O Green, Beautiful Lebanon). People were spellbound; it was a magical moment. Since the first time she appeared live before an audience in 1957, Fairuz has traveled to places that as a child she seemingly could hope to know only through her grandparents' tales. She has sung at the ruins of the Philadelphia Amphitheatre in Amman, as well as in Damascus, Baghdad, Rabat, Algiers, Cairo, Tunis; she has traveled overseas, reaching out to Arab emigrants in Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, New York, San Francisco, Montreal, Sydney, London, Paris, and many other cities throughout the world. On these trips, Fairuz has been offered as a traditional gesture of welcome, the symbolic key to many cities; perhaps the closest to her heart remains the golden key she received from the Mayor of Jerusalem, which she received during a private visit there with her father in 1961. Although Fairuz did not sing during her one visit to the holy city, Jerusalem is honored in many of her songs.Yet to Fairuz, all the official acclaim and recognition that she has received over the years does not parallel the joy she experiences as she sings when she spots the absorbed attention of a single anonymous listener in a crowd. To her, singing is not merely a perfected profession, but a way of life. The Fairuz of today, like the Fairuz of yesteryear, continues to attend mass in the village church at Antilias. There, every year, during Holy Week she sings to the devout villagers with a dedication that perhaps is equaled only by their simple piety. It is this dedication that consistently refines her talent and continues to set Fairuz apart in a category all her own amid the chaotic trends of Middle Eastern music.

BIO: Cheb Mami, real name Mohamed Khelifati (born July 11, 1966 in Saida, Algeria) is an Algeria-born raï singer. He sings in both French and Maghribi Arabic. In 1982, the 16-year-old adolescent sang on the "Alhan wa Chabab" radio show, a singing competition organised by Radio Télevision Algérienne. He sang "El Marsam" (The Sanctuary) a classic of Oranese music from the 1920s. The audience was transfixed by the sheer emotion of his performance and by his sinuous vocal intonations which captured perfectly the flavour of the song's title. The judges, who represented a government which refused to admit even the existence of raï, gave the first prize to a cover version of a hit by the famous Egyptian diva, Oum Kalthoum, but were forced to acknowledge the standing ovation Mami received by awarding him second prize.Cheb Mami was spotted by Boualem, the producer of the Oran label, Disco Maghreb, and the cassette waltz began. From 1982 to 1985, Cheb Mami recorded about ten cassettes, whose production varied from 100,000 to 500,000 copies.Cheb Mami made his first official public appearance at the First Oran Raï Festival in 1985, which marked the official recognition of the genre by the Algerian authorities. As well as recording many straight raï songs, Cheb Mami has achieved crossover success with the hip-hop remix of his track "Parisien du Nord" on his album Meli Meli and also with the backing vocals on Sting's hit "Desert Rose".When Sting's album was released in 2000, the pair's duet, "Desert Rose", went rocketing to the top of singles charts around the world, fulfilling Mami's long-held dream of internationalising Raï sounds.Perhaps Mami's most successful recording is the album Dellali, produced by former CHIC guitarist Nile Rodgers, which was released soon after his collaboration with Sting.Coincidentally, the album's lead single is entitled "Le Rai C'est Chic" - although the word is used in the original French sense.

BIO: Asala is the daughter of late Moustapha Nasri. She has 2 sisters and 2 brothers: Amani, Ayham, Reem and Anas. is married to Ayman Zahabi and has one daughter called Sham, and one boy called Khalid. Asala was not a good student at all! She didn’t get expelled just because she was very polite and quite, and teachers loved her, but now she regrets it! Asala loves Fairuz, and the first time she met her she was only 12 years old, at the house of the famous actor Doried Lahham. Her father didn’t allow her to sing romantic songs when she was a child, unless he was with her. Her daughter, Sham, was named after Damascus -Sham in Arabic- as a proof of her love to her city.

Asala doesn’t like to see a couple in love fighting. If it happens and she sees one, she has to reconcile them immediately even if she doesn’t know them. And this sometimes puts her in trouble!

Her father discovered her talent when she was eight years old. He was a famous singer, so she started to perform his songs. Soon after, she started to participate at children’s festivals with her own songs. She liked to sing for Om Kulthom too. Asala learned to be responsible very early, after her father’s death, an accident that affected her a lot. She took care of her family, and played the role of a mother for her brothers, especially the youngest one. Asala says her strength is concentrated in her voice. She doesn’t like taking decisions. She is a very nervous person, and she is very hard on herself. She is shy, introvert and lives a very quite life, in which she is more a mother than a singer. Asala sings for the oriental woman, about her feelings and her problems. Sweetness, simplicity, and modesty, this is Asala.

    Angham
    Monday, June 25, 2007
BIO: Angham comes from a family in which the word "music" is not strange to their imagination. In fact, she has been raised and musically nurtured on her father's hand, reknowed Mohammad Suleiman. Her uncle, Imad Abdel Haleem, is a singer and married to the famous belly-dancer, Najwa Fouad, but unfortunately, died at the age of thirty. Angham, affected by the death of her uncle whom she loved so much, released later an expressive and angry song called Leih Ya Donia Hazzi Ma'aki Kida?. Angham has two siblings: her sister, Ghinwah, and her brother, Khaled. Her first contact with the audience was with her Mother Day song El Gannah Taht Akdamik in which she sang it among the public at the age of 17. She recalls the mothers who wiped their tears, moved by her performance. Angham's sucess started with her first album Fil Rokn El Baeed elHadi. The success that it gained pushed the young singer into a further position among the 1989 generation of singers, reserving for herself a special position. Angham lived a state of relief and proud and soon continued to improve her vocal capacities with her father. She also studied in the Conservatory of Music in Cario and excelled in playing the Oud. Egyptian people recall Angham as a little cute girl with big teeth and had faith that this star will soon shine and expand its light around the arabic world. Angham continued working on her following albums, concentrating on the classism melodies caracterised by the poetic words and the oriental flavour. She released many albums in full Egyptian dilact but also in the Gulf. Albums like "Khally Bokra La Bokra", "Betheb Meen" and "Ella Ana" gained many success in Egypt. Gulf people adopted Angham as their favourite singer because of her excellency in speaking the Gulf dilact and her feelings. During those brillant years, Egypt nicknamed Angham as the Queen of Romance and Egypt's Number One Voice. Among the immortal and tradition singers who praised Angham's voice was Shadia, Fayrouz, Najat and Prominant Egyptian singer Warda. But during those years, Angham faced a depression affecting her personally and artistically: after successful albums, Angham refused to work with her father in her next albums in the goal of renewing her style. Her dad, surprised by the act of his daughter, disowned her and promised not to do any future artistic collaboration with her. At this time, the arabic music changed form with the apparition of the western influence with pop superstar Amro Diab, Mohammad Munir and Midhat Saleh. Angham was forced to take the previous descision in order to evolve her voice and keep updated with the new music but in her own special way. In 1999, Angham created a new album Wahdaniya in which she worked with new composers and writers. In her album, she presented a new flavour of music that represent her only. While keeping the peotic lyrics, Angham changed the oriental music into a more rapid one, minimizing the long tunes. While the world of clips started to show intensively, Angham was forced to shoot Ba'atly Nazra from this album in which she appeared in a classic look, probably scared from any sudden reaction from her fans. The clip appeared simple, showing Angham in a summer flavour, beside the beach and the sand. She appeared with a new look in which many people thought ressembled to Leila Murad's. Cinematic directors presented a lot of scenario for Angham to let her reproduce the life of the Diva Layla Murad, who used to be Egypt's most powerful feminine voice after the legendary Um Koulthoum, but Angham refused them all, saying she can't do that, knowing Layla Murad's popularity and reputation in Egypt. After that, Angham shot another music video for her song Bithebbaha Walla which many of her fans consider it as a message this day: in that clip, Angham appeared at the same time in two new looks: an old classic one and a new young one, meaning a transformation in her career or maybe a creation of a new wave of fans? During Wahdaniya album, Angham's life with her husband distabilized. After she disappeared from the music scenes for two years, Angham finally got divorced from her husband, Magdy Aref, who used to be her manager and director of her previous clips like Betheb Meen. The divorce came after personal rupture of ideas and not being able to cope together. Angham found herself obliged to take care of their child, Omar, and thus, slowed down the rate in which she used to produce albums. But this difficult time in which Angham passed through faded quickly as a new unattended surprise awaited her. In 2001, Angham released her favourite album, Leih Sebtaha, which is considered to be one of the best album that the Arabic world ever witnessed and was on the number 1 in the Billboard for many months. The secret of its success was one special song: Sidi Wisalak. This song appeared to be an unique one because it is very new in term of melody and vocals. Angham used the chance to shoot this song as a clip with the new director, Ahmad elMahdy, who presented her with a new look and a new drama scenario. The idea of the music video rotates around Angham who fell in love with a man she always meet in the train station. She demonstrate her profound love by stealing his shirt button which fell down from the man. In the end of the clip, the man (Ayman Kaysouni : model and TV presenter) returns back to Angham, discovering her love and confession to him over the radio. People were amazed from the transformation that Angham did to her look after she fixed her teeth and her eyebrows while hiring a Lebanese stylist to take care of her appearance. The clip is still aired intensively nowadays and its success reached the media everywhere and was the talk of Egypt. She received two big awards: best clip 2001 and best female singer 2001 in Cairo's Annual Music ceremony. The success she gained caused lots of singers to be jealous. Few weeks after the broadcasting of Sidi Wisalak's clip, Angham fell ill and was hospitalised due to the jealousy that many singers, mainly female ones, developped toward the singer. In 2000, Angham participated also in Intifadain the most famous duet, Nihlam Eih?, with the deceased Zikra.Soon, Alam Elphan, Angham's new production company, offered the singer another chance to continue proving her stardom and this time, with a new and completely western album, Omry Maak. Omry Maak, produced and supervised by Alam Elphan, was finally released in August 2003. With this album, Angham returns to present a new flavour, similar to Amro Diab, in which most of her songs had western flavour in them. Angham shot Omry Maak as a music video with the same director, Ahmad elMahdy, during six consecutive days. The clip turned out to be magical, demonstrating Angham's "motherly" talent as she is seen with a boy in which many thought was her own son. Angham wanted to shoot Arefha Biya as her second clip but Alam Elphan refused as shooting a second song was not figured in their contract with the singer, resulting finally in burning the deal and in the seperation of the company from the singer. Before the release of Omry Maak album, the press attacked Angham for marrying secretly her Kuweit-origined musical arrangist, Fahed. Angham responded strictly to the matter by annoucing officially her marriage from him after she joined another music production company, Rotana, possessed by Prince Walid Bin Talal. The mariage was done on a yatch on the Nile River and Angham invited many famous pop singers such as Sherine Abdel Wahab, World Music Best Selling Lebanese artist Elissa, Ehab Toufic, and the manager of Rotana Company, Salem Elhindy. Angham supported her album by doing many interviews mainly Nawart El dar in which her fans consider as the one where she shined a lot. In that program, Angham sang Warda's songs to honour her and in return got praised by her powerful but soft voice. Also, Angham was guest in many famous talk-show and programs like Star Academy 1,El Beit Beitak, Moubashar with Mahmoud Sa'd, kalam nawa3em , Star Search and others.

    Aline Khalaf

BIO: Aline Khalaf's passion for music was obvious from the start but her real break came when she took part in the famous program for amateur singers; Layali Lebnan, and managed to walk away with the Global Medal. This prize gave her a steady push into the world of show business.

Since then it became clear to Aline that music and singing were her only true passion and lifetime dream. So she started to perform in big restaurants alongside some of the already known stars. When she finally found a production company to back her talent and believe in her; the Lebanese singer started working on her first album right away. Relax-in Company stood by the singer all the way and together they hit the market with Khayfa Menak.

Next to come was Bousat Al-Rih that marked another steady step forward for the singer. When Ya Zein was released, Khalaf was quite famous already and had become known in the Arab world. Wayed Wayed followed soon after and was a success just like the other previous albums. But it was her hit album La Ley Lah that made the strongest impact at the time. The main song was so popular that Aline decided to shot it as a video clip-and it was a wise decision as it was as successful as the song!

Aline's next album Azz Alaya was released later and followed by the ever-popular Law Andak Kalam. The album was a further addition to the singer's already growing popularity. Khalaf's last album was Aloulak Eh. Throughout her career, Aline has shot a number of her songs as video clips that increased her fame and popularity. Among these were Wayed Wayed, La Ley Lah, Dala'a El-Habayeb, Azz Alaya, Law Andak Kalam and Aloulak Eh.

    Visa denied!
    Thursday, June 21, 2007

Oh Haifa, when will you ever learn...
It was reported that Ms. Wahbi is not allowed to enter Kuwait, thanks to the Kuwaiti paper, Al Qabas. Haifa requested a visa to enter Kuwait to promote the opening of a new store, which she was invited to attend. But the Kuwaiti government denied her request, sent her home packing, and didn't even tell her in her face. It was reported through the newspaper. Poor Haifa, things never go your way. Here's a little song to cheer you up.
